City life

Your life as an student means much more than just studying. It’s good to know that in The Netherlands most of the student life happens off-campus.

Living in Maastricht
As an international student it is most likely that you will live in the city of Maastricht, because all the English-taught programmes are located here. Maastricht is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities of the Netherlands. With 120,000 inhabitants, the city is quite small. However, it has a cosmopolitan feel, due to its proximity to Belgium and Germany. Students make up about 20% of the population, warranting a lively student culture. Maastricht is popular for its rich cultural life, a wide variety of shops and boutiques, in addition to many terraces, bars and restaurants. It is regarded as one of the safest cities in the Netherlands. All of which make it an ideal place to live, work and study in.

Zuyd has eight campuses in Maastricht. The building at the Brusselseweg houses several international study programmes. The Academies of Music, Performing Arts and Fine Arts are located in the city centre, while the Hotel Management School and the Faculty of Midwifery are located at the edges of the city.

Living in our region
Maastricht is part of the attractive province of Limburg, the most southern province of the Netherlands. Bustling and dynamic towns such as Aachen, Liège, Hasselt and Tongeren are close by, humming with cultural activity and great places for shopping or entertainment. If you prefer outdoor activities and nature, it is only a short drive to the hills of the Ardennes and the Eifel.

Other campuses
Zuyd also has campuses in the nearby cities of Heerlen and Sittard:

  • Heerlen
Not many people regard Heerlen as a typical student town. But nothing could be further from the truth – Heerlen is a great place to spend your student days. The city centre features great pubs and outdoor cafés that are filled with students during fine weather. A number of student associations are located in cafés and restaurants downtown. The centre also houses two cinemas and the city theatre.
    • Campus
The modern building in Heerlen at Nieuw Eyckholt houses numerous study programmes and facilities. It is located close to the city centre, which can easily be reached by bus, by bicycle or even on foot.
  • Sittard
Sittard has all the ingredients for fun-filled student days. Around the historic market square of Sittard, there is a wide range of pleasant pubs and restaurants. There is a town theatre, a modern cinema and you can find several discotheques in the cities nearby. Sittard offers a wide range of sports facilities. Various fitness centres offer special reductions to students with a student card.
    • Campus
Zuyd has a brand new location in Sittard: Ligne, at the edge of the historic centre and real close to the train station. The building also houses a museum, an art cinema, and shops.
