Scholarships

Several types of scholarships are available for talented and highly motivated non-EU students who are applying for a government funded, fully English taught, bachelor's or master's programme.

NL - Zuyd Excellence Scholarship (NL-ZES)

The NL–Zuyd Excellence Scholarship (NL-ZES) is a combination scholarship offering a higher scholarship amount in the first year in comparison to the Zuyd Excellence Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded in the form of a NL Scholarship amount (formerly known as Holland Scholarship) of € 5000 in the first year in addition to the Zuyd Excellence Scholarship (max. € 3600 net discount on your tuition fee) for the the nominal duration of your study. The study progress of students who are awarded the NL–ZES is monitored yearly, as a minimum of 45 obtained credits per academic year is required for renewal of the scholarship for the following academic year. Renewal of the scholarship applies only for the nominal duration of the programme concerned. 

Please be aware that submitted NL-ZES applications are assessed on an individual basis, in order of arrival and are always subject to supply and demand.

> Final submission deadline: 1 May

Applicants that are not selected for the NL-ZES will automatically be considered for the Zuyd Excellence Scholarship (ZES) after 1 June.

Reserve list
Some students may be initially placed on a reserve list and may still receive a scholarship if other scholarship holders either fail to meet alternative requirements or reject their scholarship.

Application criteria 
To be eligible for a NL-ZES, you must meet the following criteria: 

  • You do not have a EU/EEA nationality, or the nationality of Switzerland or Suriname.
  • You have received your Zuyd student number through Studielink.
  • You meet the specific requirements of the study programme.
  • You are required to pay the highest institutional tuition fees.
  • You live in the Netherlands during your study period.
  • You have never cut short a Zuyd programme without obtaining a degree.
  • You have not previously obtained a degree from an education facility in the Netherlands. (Please note that this condition only applies for the Holland Scholarship, if you do not meet this criteria, you can still apply for the Zuyd Excellence Scholarship)
  • You are applying to start one of the following government funded, fully English taught programmes:
    • European Studies
    • Hospitality (Hotel) Management
    • Interdisciplinary Arts
    • International Business
    • Music (Bachelor and Master)
    • Interior Architecture

Your NL-ZES application
You application must include:

  • A completed and signed NL-ZES application form (pdf) 
  • A personal letter of motivation for wanting to study at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences 
  • One letter of reference by e.g. a lecturer or a mentor of your current educational institution 
  • Your curriculum vitae (resume)

Your letter of motivation (max. 1 page A4) must include the following items:

  • Why have you chosen this particular study programme at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences
  • What value you expect this study programme to add to your previous education
  • What you expect this study programme to contribute to your future career

The letter of reference should be signed, dated and submitted on official stationary and must include:

  • Your name and the name, position and department of the referee of your current educational institution 
  • Description of the applicant’s excellent academic abilities and competencies.

Awarding of the NL-ZES

  • NL-ZES applications are assessed on an individual basis and in order of arrival and are always subject to supply and demand. 
  • A committee of the International Office and the concerning faculty decides on the awarding and distribution of the scholarships among the applicants. Selection is based on academic merit and/or entrance examination results and the motivation and reference letters accompanying this registration form. 
  • You will be notified of the scholarship awarding results by email before 1 June, unless there are pending entrance exams.
  • If you are not granted a scholarship, you may deregister for the programme without any further obligations before 31 August preceding the academic year for which you have registered.
  • The NL-ZES is awarded in the form of an amount of € 5000 in the first year in addition to the Zuyd Excellence Scholarship  (max. € 3600 net discount on your tuition fee) for the nominal duration of your study.
    Please note: To receive these payments you will need a Dutch bank account.
  • A minimum of 45 obtained credits per academic year is required for renewal of the scholarship for the following academic year. Renewal of the scholarship applies only for the nominal duration of the programme concerned.

Limiting conditions

  • In order to receive the scholarship funds recipients must meet the intake conditions as presented by the faculty they have applied to and be accepted to the programme by completing their admission through Studielink. Funds will not be dispersed until proof of acceptance into the program has been presented to the International Office by the Zuyd Admissions Office. If the student is not admitted to the programme the Zuyd International Office reserves the right to revoke the scholarship until further notice.
  • If the student deregisters prematurely, part of the scholarship that has been paid out will be reclaimed pro rata.
  • You will no longer be entitled to the Zuyd Excellence Scholarship if at any given moment in time during your studies you fail to meet all of the above listed criteria.  
  • As a scholarship recipient you may be contacted by the marketing and recruitment team of your Faculty to put in a max. 50 service hours per year for promotional activities. At the beginning of the academic year you will be invited to an information session by your marketing and recruitment team, to receive more information about the planning.

Maastricht - Chengdu Friendship Scholarship

Zuyd provides one full tuition fee waiver for one talented and highly motived student from the city of Chengdu in China. An awarded scholarship is worth maximum € 8700 per academic year (which is the total yearly tuition fee for a bachelor’s degree programme for a non-EU student). In total the scholarship represents the value of the nominal duration of the study program concerned. 

Please be aware that submitted Maastricht – Chengdu Friendship Scholarship applications are assessed on an individual basis, in order of arrival and are always subject to supply and demand.

Applicants that are not selected for the Maastricht – Chengdu Friendship Scholarship will automatically be considered for the Zuyd Excellence Scholarship (ZES) after 1 June.

  • You meet the specific requirements of the study programme.
  • You are required to pay the highest institutional tuition fees.
  • You live in the Netherlands during your study period.
  • You have never cut short a Zuyd programme without obtaining a degree.
  • You are applying to start one of the following government funded, fully English taught programmes:
    • European Studies
    • Hospitality (Hotel) Management
    • Interdisciplinary Arts
    • International Business
    • Music (Bachelor and Master)
    • Interior Architecture

Your Maastricht – Chengdu Friendship Scholarship application

Other scholarships

Besides the available scholarships from Zuyd, there are more providers. These include the Dutch government, the European Union and other private scholarship providers. Funding is available for students wishing to spend a short period abroad as well as for those seeking to follow an entire programme of study abroad.
